What Is The Estimated Hair Transplant Cost For a Norwood 3 or 4 ?
Written by Bradley Limmer, MD on August 13, 2009
I am between a 3 and a 4 on the Norwood scale. I know it’s hard to give a price without seeing me, but I am asking for an estimate that will give me some kind of idea what I can afford.
Thanks in advance,
Terry

Mr. Terry,
As you might expect, meeting a patients expectations depend on many factors with regards to their current state and end goals. Many men depending on age could be very happy with as little as 3000 grafts (esp is you are more of a stage 3 than 4), but I would not be surprised if you came back in at a later date and add another 1500 grafts.
In addition to your pattern hair color, quality and curl can have significant benefits or detractions with regards to your overall happiness. So many factors go into achieving ones desired goal that it can be hard to say what you might spend. But I suspect it would cost somewhere between 10K-15K to produce and nice end result. Read more
Do You Think I Am Overpaying For My Hair Transplant?
Written by Robert J. Reese, DO on February 5, 2009
I went in for a consultation and was told I would need about 200-250 grafts for a bald area that I have that is the size of a quarter on the hairline of my temple from birth. I was quoted $3,000. Not FUE just a regular transplant. I have never believed one should shop around for medical procedures, but everyone tells me it’s way too much. Based on this quote the grafts would come out to $12 if I implanted 250, and $15 if I implanted $200. My research online told me grafts normally range between $5-9. I live in a major metropolitan city and granted the doctor is a recognized doctor, but by comparison this seems a bit much. Am I overpaying? Please advise. -Leeanne

Dear Leeanne:
Thank you for your question. There is an old adage that goes, “In life, you get what you pay for.” This is especially true in the field of surgical hair restoration. I have encountered many, many patients over the years that have chosen to have a transplant procedure with their primary decision making factor being “price”. They comfort themselves into thinking that their procedure will be performed by another “qualified” physician. And they go on to regret their decision in the end. Read more
I Want To Get a Hair Transplant of 500 Grafts, But Everyone Seems To Want To Oversell Me!
Written by Mark McKenzie, MD on June 27, 2008
I have thin hair on the top and require only about 400-500 grafts to thicken it up to my satisfaction. The problem is every hair transplant center I have had a consultation with say they don’t do anything less than a $4000 dollar procedure. Is there anywhere I can get what I want? It seems everyone wants to oversell me! - John

Hi John
Thank you for your question.
You feel that you need “only about 400-500 grafts to thicken your hair up to your satisfaction.”
Assuming that you are talking about follicular units, this number of grafts would equal approximately 900-1100 hairs. To put this in perspective, this amount of hair is approximately 1% of the total amount of hair that you had on your head when you were a teenager. If these grafts were transplanted at a density of 50 FUs per square cm they would only cover 20 square cm which is equivalent to a circle with a diameter of 5 cm or 2 inches. If they were transplanted at a lower density of 25 FUs per square cm they would cover 40 square cm which is equivalent to a circle with a diameter of 7.2 cm or 2.8 inches. Read more
$2 a Graft Hair Transplant - Is It Possible To Get a Good Hair Transplant At This Price?
Written by Dr. James DeYarman on January 16, 2008
I’ve been trying to research my hair restoration options as best as I can, but keep running into conflicting information. I want to have a hair transplant but I an not sure how to get the best hair transplant for the best price. I keep seeing ads on the internet for doctors who will do a transplant for $2 dollars a graft, but as with everything in life I fear the ” I will get what I pay for.” I’m very glad that I found your organization and was hoping you can give me some guidance. Can I get a good hair transplant for $2 dollars a graft or will these doctors be cutting corners? Thanks in advance for your help, Peter

It may be possible to get a hair transplant for $2 dollars a graft but you could get a bad hair transplant. Clinic’s that promote price are either hair transplant mills (more then one procedure per day) or a new doctor starting out. When a new doctor is starting out in this business he will offer his services for less money to get your business. Research his patients and his training. Ask if there are any additional fees and how the number of grafts needed is determined. You should find out the largest number of grafts the doctor has transplanted in one session and the type of grafts he usually transplants. Read more
Traveling Outside of the Country For a Hair Transplant
Written by Peter Panagotacos, MD on December 22, 2007
I am considering a hair transplant. I have consulted with two surgeons in San Francisco (near where I live) and am considering having the work done at one of their clinics. The transplant procedure recommended by both surgeons is for about 1800 grafts and the cost would be approximately $8500.-$9000.
I have been considering the possibility of having the procedure done by a well qualified surgeon in another part of the country or even outside of the US (i.e Latin America). I believe that even after considering travel costs I can save money and receive the same quality work that I would receive in the Bay Area. What do you think about traveling outside of the country for hair restoration work?
There are internationally renown physicians around the world. If you are looking at Latin America you will find Dr Carl Bazan and Dr. Hector D. Sandoval both in Mexico, Drs Carlos O. Uebel and Marcelo Gandelman of Brazil are greatly regarded by their peers , as is Dr Guillermo S. Blugerman of Argentina. Also south but not on the same continent are Drs Russell Knudsen and Mario Marzola both in Australia. Read more
